I've been trying to decide how to rate and review this. Itโs a well-constructed book that couldn't have been written by anyone else. Ann Rule had an incredibly unique view into the life of the worst kind of human and sometimes the most shocking bits aren't the unfathomable brutality, but the stoic normalcy. This person was her friend and they behaved as friends. I think there is this idea that if you were to stand eye-to-eye with evil that you would sense their wrongness in your bones, like a residue they leave behind that can't be masked. But the real more disturbing truth is that evil is as boring as anyone else. And that is terrifying.
I'm not as enthusiastic about True Crime as I once was but this is still a fascinating read. Certainly, a perspective you're not likely to find any place else. There is a fine line that is walked when writing about real events and people - you need to be accurate but not boring, entertaining but not ghoulish. Despite some dated language, I think Ann does a good job of that. This is still a must read if you enjoy True Crime but by the time I got to the end, I was ready to be done with it.

I usually talk about serious stuff. This is also serious. What's your book cover ick? What kind of cover makes you not wanna pick up the book even though it might be the greatest story of all time.
For me, it's when there are real life people on the book covers, or a half naked male torso, or when the letters are too swirly (not cursive. Like when the edges of the letters are swirly). I don't care if this is a masterpiece of a novel, why are you trying to get me to bleach my eyes or give me dyslexia (I don't have dyslexia)

hi ๐ซ๐s!!! what is a dealbreaker in a book that will make you dnf (or make you enter a hate-read for those who refuse to dnf ๐)? is there a trope or word or situation or writing style that just overwhelms you with ick?
for me a big ick is all of the euphemisms for vulva or vagina (lady cave, SHEATH ๐คข) or even miscommunication trope sets me off too ๐คฃ
