  • Wheel of Shame: Book 2

Hullo! I have always bought/received books faster than I can read them and the unsightly culmination of that is that I own 118+ books I have not read. So, I am not allowed to buy/check-out any new books until I have read or given away all the ones I already have. To do this, I put all my books on a TBR Wheel to spin and I will read whatever it lands on.

WHEEL RULES ♩ If I land on something I do not feel like reading, I can skip it. But once a book has been skipped three times, I must read it or give it away. ♩ Once I start reading, I will attempt to read the first 100 pages but after that I can DNF at any time. I'm being loose about this one to avoid burnout. ♩ Any new books gifted to me will go on the wheel. ♩ 1 book = 1 Point. 10 Points = I get to buy a new book and choose to either read it immediately or add it to the TBR Wheel. DNF still counts as a point because the purpose of the wheel is to clear my physical TBR, whether I read it or not.

UPDATES Added "Book of Choice" to the Wheel. I can either buy a new book or choose from what is already on the Wheel. I'm also considering small rewards for removing 1-2 books from my TBR, like a bookmark or a new pen (because I love a good pen).

BOOK 2 Aaaand book number two is: booktwo A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

The Wheel initially landed on Bossypants by Tina Fey but my last book was non fiction and I and I would very much prefer some genre fiction right now. So Bossypants has one skip and the next spin landed on A Darker Shade of Magic, which I am excited to read. I have never read V.E. Schwab so I am looking forward to that!

Let me know if you think there is anything else I should add to my Wheel Rules or other ideas! I love to hear them.

I think the only reason I'm not rating this higher is because I picked it up during a very stressful time and I probably should have been reading something a bit lighter. I tend to prefer genre fiction and can be a little more critical when it comes to contemporary fiction. So my rating reflects more so on me than the actual book, which is very well written - the character voices are so strong. So much of Max is relatable, to the point it really slowed down my reading because I would read a line and my mind would immediately drift to my irl parallels.

I recommend this, especially if you enjoy contemporary fiction, vivid characters and realistic family and relationship dynamics. Unfortunately, it was a little too real for me at a time when I needed distraction from real life.
