Just finished reading the entire series with my 9 year old. And the amount of conversations we had to have about basic issues throughout was rather insane.
When I was a child reader my takeaway was that this book was about anti isolationism pro multiculturalism and a serious canary call to warn about what happened when a rising nationalist right and fascism takeover (not so far in the past when they first came out and even more horrifying to see the parallels now).
The series is beautiful, haunting really at how truly flawed my two favorite characters of the series were - Dumbledore and Snape. That affection withstood the test of time. Because they're meant to be flawed .
It is the other less intentional choices that are problematic and undermine that larger progressive everyone is valuable and everyone matters claims. Bullying, body shaming, triangulation and abuse by faculty at a boarding school ....and especially the very assimilationist or trope leaden depictions of any non white non British character or race (goblin etc). As a historian many of the connections of the house elves to slavery felt flat and I got way to much ick at the parallels between the lost cause rhetoric and pro confederate push to paint the picture of a happily enslaved person. With no real reason or mechanism for it to advance the plot in meaningful ways.
The world is magical. The storytelling masterful. The creator?.... A now blight upon this earth. Mind your business lady Voldemort and let the happy people be happy ya turf ass-be-otch and stop ruining the fun for al the he she theys thems and queerdos that make the world go round.

I read this a few months ago but I really loved Claire and despite my belief that I would not ..... I actually loved the whole forest chase kinkiness. It made the book feel way more adventurous than it was and made the connection between the two leads more intense - but tied to the always weird but also always fun pay to play dynamic. I would read again and it was def on the sweeter side of the genre.
