Appreciation post ( though from 100%)

This felt like a Ghibli movie: sweet, cozy, talking about deep, dark-ish and important things, plots twists, a love story that wasn’t rushed to get to spicy scenes, real character development, no toxic MMC disguised as “morally grey” or “misunderstood”. Not full of tropes we have seen thousands of times. Would recommend. If anyone has suggestions that feel like this, please share.

At the end, I was just rage reading because it was so bad 😭 I had heard so many good things about this book, but I was left utterly disappointed. From the best friend who keeps talking about sex, ignoring her trauma, pushing her onto men, to the male dark guy who omits information. Also portraying therapy as something that doesn’t help and is basically useless? Excuse me?! We have 2025. Don’t get me started on the names for the vagina, her spanking him with her hairbrush, all the lion metaphors… I might add the worst quotes later so everyone can understand. Just save yourself the time and don’t read this. Some examples: " His words play over and over in my head. Pure torture. Worse? I can picture it. So can my kitty, because she’s wet and aching between my legs, plaintively mewling for Kage’s big rough hand to pet her." All conversations with her "best friend" left me with such an ick. “What I mean is that you’re the kind of girl who makes normally sane men lose their minds. You could turn the pope into a sex addict.” [...] “I’m being serious. It’s the whole virgin-with-the-bod-made-for-sin thing. Men go crazy for that shit. You’re one of their ten standard fantasies.” “I hate to burst your bubble, but I haven’t been a virgin since before Oprah went off the air.” “Close enough. How many penises have you seen?” Who asks another women how many penises she has seen? [..]takes a big, greedy mouthful of my ass. He sinks his teeth into it with an animal’s snarl. It’s a primitive sound of victory. Like a lion gloating over a fresh kill. Then in place of his teeth I get his hand"

  • How do you rate debut novels?

After finishing a book that was very obviously a debut, it got me thinking about how others rate them. If you know you're reading a debut, does that change your rating? If so, are you more harsh or gentle with the stars you give? I think for me, my rating is usually pretty consistent, but I do have a little thought in my brain that maybe I should be more lenient?? I'm conflicted because if a book is good enough to be published, shouldn't it be able to hold its own against work from established authors? But then at the same time, this is such a hard market to break into... I'm curious to hear what others think!

3.75 for me. There was less graphic content than you might think. I really enjoyed it, and the audiobook narrators were pretty good as well. You just shouldn't think too hard while reading this book, though.

  • A feature I’d love on book apps

i have no idea if this would ever be possible, but thought i’d mention something i’ve always wanted out of a book app (literally i think about this every time i use storygraph) i’d looove if when adding a book to my tbr, i could add just a little note where i can document where i found out about the book and why in that moment im so intrigued to read it i just find my tbr can get so long i often look through it and see many books in which i have no recollection of where it was recommended to me, or why i was excited by it. especially as i tend to get my recommendations from many many sources. does this sound like something anybody else would enjoy too? perhaps could be a future suggestion the the page bound creators

So far, I'm really intrigued. Which makes me wonder why there aren't more underwater books???? This is such a cool and interesting setting.
