Ale chyba są inne duchy, wiesz, takie, co żyją w człowieku obok tych naszych dusz, zwyczajnych. I czegoś tam sobie chcą. Niektóre są ciche, inne głośne. Wrzeszczą, hałasują. To jest nie do wytrzymania. Znaczy, tak mi się wydaje, że z takim duchem w środku strasznie ciężko żyć, zwłaszcza jak on chce czegoś, na co ty nie masz ochoty. Miasto. Zniszczone, obdrapane i brudne kamienice. Zmęczeni ludzie w ubłoconych, wiecznie spóźnionych i zatłoczonych autobusach. Przygnębienie i pustka. I nagle w jednej głowie kiełkuje ta dziwna myśl, nieodparte pragnienie. Bez motywu, bez powodu, jak głód. Tak jakby ciało przejmowała inna dusza, która nakazuje to zrobić, i nie można od niej uciec. Pewnego dnia miasto zatrzyma się przerażone zbrodnią.

W latach 1933–1995 w konkursach pamiętnikarskich dla mieszkańców wsi mogło wziąć udział nawet dziewięćdziesiąt tysięcy kobiet. To Nowy Sącz albo pół Olsztyna pamiętnikarek. Julianna spisywała swój pamiętnik w latach trzydziestych – nocami, w tajemnicy przed mężem. Danka w latach sześćdziesiątych – rankiem, czekając, aż rozpali się pod piecem. Teresa w roku 1983 – w PKS-ie wiozącym ją do pracy w pobliskiej masarni. Janka jako nastolatka marzyła o studiach polonistycznych, ale bardziej potrzebna była w gospodarstwie. Została więc pamiętnikarką. Dla wielu bohaterek tej książki spisywanie wspomnień było aktem uznania, że ich historia zasługuje na uwagę. Po raz pierwszy miały okazję przyjrzeć się osobistym doświadczeniom i nadać im znaczenie wykraczające poza sferę prywatną. Opowiadały własnymi słowami o przemocy, biedzie czy wstydzie i w ten sposób sprzeciwiały się dominującym normom społecznym i kulturowym. Antonina Tosiek sięgnęła po setki oryginalnych rękopisów i maszynopisów nadesłanych na konkursy, a także po dane statystyczne i opracowania naukowe. Łącząc wnikliwą analizę z wrażliwością, stworzyła obraz przemian polskiej wsi w XX wieku. Obraz realistyczny i głęboko poruszający.

I am struggling with this book. So far characters are one dimensional only and it’s already 20% of the book. I can’t shake off the feeling that this is cheap Netflix “funny” movie disguised as a book… I really push myself to read it and I am contemplating abandoning it. Does it get better?

When you describe a 14 year old rape victims breasts as "her almost virginal breasts had risen like yeast," I have to hate

The beginning of this book was so promising, a bed bound, grumpy old lady remembering her past.

I love grumpy characters, I'm curious about Iceland, and at the beginning it was such an adventurous past....

And then shit goes downhill.

The male author describes disgustingly a minor girl's body.

And it only gets worse.

And Worse.

And you think you've hit the bottom of the shit

And then she goes to Argentina, and you realise you were so hopeful and naive because it's horrible.

Honestly I'm so sick of male authors being fucking disgusting towards their female characters. Cut. It. Out.

New App Version + Quality of Life updates (7/16/2026)

Hi all! New app version (1.1.93) is now available on both iOS and Android. This includes mostly quality of life updates, some small feature enhancements, and bug fixes - web was also updated! Here's a quick rundown of what changed:

Search Improvements: When you search on the app, you can navigate back to your search results. On web, searching in "Browse Lists" and "Browse Quests" also saves your search results.

Search by Emoji: This beloved feature is now available on the app! You can find a link in Search. This got a design upgrade on web as well - you can now search specifically for books, lists, or quests by Emoji and see the total results for each category.

Updated Emojis: The emoji list was updated on app to include newer emojis

Additional badge slots for Royalty: Royalty can now display up to 12 badges on their profiles (warning: if the app is not updated yet and you display more than 6, the badges will run off the screen!) EDIT: was made aware the badges will run off the screen when viewing someone else's profile. They will look correct when viewing your own. I'm sorry, silly bug from me! Will put up an "emergency" update in next few days.

New ways to add a book: In a shocking turn of events, we are able to offer the Add Missing Book via Goodreads Link feature again. You now have 3 options when adding a new book to the Pagebound database: Goodreads link, ISBN/ASIN manual form, non-ISBN manual form

Block List in Settings: under Account & Settings, you can see all the users you've blocked and manage your block list.

Update Reading Progress remembers your update method: that's a mouthful, but basically if you update your reading progress using %, you'll be defaulted to % the next time you log progress (or pages or minutes, whatever tracking method you choose)

Confirmation popup when clicking I'm Finished: In the progress update modal, there's a confirmation step before finishing the book when you click I'm Finished (for everyone who was accidentally clicking that and messing up their reads!)

What's next on the roadmap? We're working on making editing your reading data more accessible and intuitive (think: updating your start/finish date when you click the "Reading" and "Finished" statuses, editing format and length in the reading status modal) After that, we have major projects related to Quests (Quest dashboards 👀) and a huge Library revamp (I'm calling this "Library V2")
