Reading this book has felt entirely like the Star Wars trash compactor scene, and Hannah has done a great job of writing in a foreboding, dread-seeping-in way.

Loreda is growing up, for better or worse. I’m so glad she can use a gun, ride a horse, and has a practical head on her shoulders (even if she did idolize her dad for most of her life). When discussing story structure, everyone discusses the Hero’s Journey, but the Heroine’s Journey irrevocably has a mother/daughter rift and echoes of patriarchy baked into it. I’m interested in seeing how Loreda and Elsa’s relationship changes.

Ant’s stint in the hospital gave me a whole new fear for any upcoming death flags for him.

I hope Rose and Tony are okay. I hope they survive. They were so good to Elsa, and honest, hardworking people.

Being a mother (parent, in general) sounds terrifying.
