I kind of loved everything about this book except, often, the actual reading of it. The ideas were so engaging - time/memory/losing either or both - at an individual and/or national level - yes please! To say nothing of the theme of what repeats or is inevitable, and if that's from individual actions vs human nature vs fate - that was wonderful. There's a dreaminess that was fun to reflect on but could be slippery to the point of irritation in the reading - does Gaustine actually exist? Does it matter?
I can't speak at all to the fidelity of the translation, but I thought the writing in English was fantastic and I was really impressed with how indelibly and uniquely it came across!
I might have given up on this book had I not dipped into The Bookstore Podcast's discussion on it (episode 148), which gave me confidence that it would be worth pushing through, and I'm glad I did! Thanks Becca and Corinne!
