Would you hate me if I said I’m way more interested in Margaret’s story than Hayden and Alice’s? 🫣

Please check the trigger and content warnings for this book if you are thinking of reading it.
This book is set in a dystopian alternate Japan where love, sex, marriage and procreation have transformed into something very different from what we currently have.
I found the first part okay, as we were only getting to know the world. The second part was very slow, and Amane kept having the same conversations with different people, rehashing thoughts and opinions over and over. I felt like this was a bit unnecessary, even though I agree with some of the statements. Murata questions the necessity of a nuclear family, and what a "normal family" looks like. This goes further in the third part where Experiment City completely disregards the family unit: everyone is a Mother, taking care of all the children "Kodomo-chan".
I enjoyed the absurdity of it, and everyone feels unhinged and a little insane. Murata is very good at creating alternate worlds where you would be the weird one in it. Still, I think the ending was unnecessary, and seriously put a damper on my enjoyment of the book. There are things that are uncomfortable but which I'm okay reading about, and this is not one of them, particularly as graphically as Murata described it.

1⭐️: enjoyed most of it, but the ending was a mistake

The premise is interesting but the plot drags along, the protagonists are flat and the ending is just the worst. I know it's dystopian but there is absolutely no spark of hope in this. I'm still traumatized.
Do not read this if you're not used to really weird literature.

I'm trying to read more translated fiction and I want to try Japanese literature. The only author I can think of is Murakami. Any suggestions?
