Reading Stoner made me feel at ease—calm, accepting the dullness of one’s existence. John Williams portrayed a person who left few marks on his life and will most likely not be remembered after his death, not as tragic, but as understandable and relatable. Searching for meaning, making a difference, wanting more—maybe one doesn’t have to force oneself to do all of that. Maybe being devoted to something and quietly living your life is neither a tragedy nor a failure, despite what some people seem to take from this story.
