Suprised that everyone is saying they're confused and not vibing with the book... To me the best books are the ones that throw you headfirst into something crazy and confusing and you are pulled along for the ride, trying to piece it all together from the scraps they throw you, until it all beautifully slots into place at the end and oh boy is this scratching that itch!! Can't wait to see where this goes!

From stolen centuries to days that echo themselves, these books breathe time travel into the weave, unraveling the seams of time and lingering in the threads that slip free.

I really enjoyed this story: A fascinating sci-fi world with intriguing concepts combined with some excellently written and nuanced characters (including one I loathed but still found engaging) and a twisty and turny plot.
It’s great to read a one and done sci-fi book and Fonda Lee’s writing is engrossing and gripping.

I didn’t say it was good, I said I liked it
Cult classics, guilty pleasures, popcorn reads, addictive stories in dire need of an editor, just some good old fun — these are books with an average enjoyment rating that is at least 0.5 stars higher than the average quality rating. This is a purely objective criterion and doesn’t necessarily reflect my personal opinion on quality or enjoyment of these books. Suggestions welcome! Please also inform me when I messed up the math/the ratings changed, that’s bound to happen sooner or later.

I was thinking about The Golden Compass earlier because I'm going to be buddy reading that series later this year (rereading in my case because we actually read it in English class in 7th grade) and about the concept of daemons in that series, which is, to summarize briefly, an animal representation of your soul that lives in the physical world with you who you can talk to and interact with. Honestly, the dream. In the book, your daemon essentially settles into one animal form based on who you are for the rest of your life when you hit puberty.
And because I love animals and always love reasons for more animal talk - what would your daemon/animal form/however you want to conceptualize it be based on your personality and why? Post a picture if you want!
