Everybody else in Avonlea, except Marilla, had already forgotten quiet, shy, unimportant Matthew Cuthbert; but his memory was still green in Anne's heart and always would be. She could never forget the kind old man who had been the first to give her the love and sympathy her starved childhood had craved.

I literally had to close the book and have a little crying session over this before I could continue on reading. 😭😭😭

Wow, what a beautiful, gorgeous, stunning piece of writing this entire chapter was.

Marjory White, aged ten, wanted to be a widow. Questioned why, she gravely said that if you weren't married people called you an old maid, and if you were your husband bossed you; but if you were a widow there'd be no danger of either.

    She's so real.

While there isn't much in the way of a plot, I so enjoy the slice-of-life, whimsical style of this series. There is such emphasis on plot in contemporary books, but sometimes a charm in these snippets of everyday lives of ordinary people not trying to embark on special quests or solve some kind of world-shattering problem.

I am enjoying this unlikely friendship forming between Anne and Mr Harrison a lot. I do miss Matthew and his bond with Anne so so so much though. 😔
