Fantasy & sci-fi sparked my love for reading, so I'll always have a soft spot for them. I'm a mood reader and genre-flexible—but nonfiction? Still my final boss.

  • "money saved" by using libraries

to partially celebrate national read a book day, a friend and i visited a branch of our city's library to "book shop" and go a little crazy checking out books to read for the month. as i was checking out, i decided on a whim to print a reciept and saw at the bottom that my library tracks how much money you've saved by checking out books through them instead of buying them, and that apparently so far this year i've saved $521.74! i just thought this was so cool and was wondering if anyone else's library does this, and if so, how much money have you "saved"?

    Take 2

I started this one years ago and got fairly far but I never finished. This time I'm going to listen to the audiobook.

  • Convincing you to read SOME of my favourite books with my favourite quotes from them.

I'm nothing if not someone who spreads propoganda about my favourite books. So without further adieu... I will try to convince you to read SOME of my favourite books using my favourite quotes from the books. Since I don't want to unnecessarily spoil anyone, I've placed the quotes under spoiler tags. None of the quotes give away anything about the core plot and plot twists (I promise) but better to be safe than sorry haha.

The Passion Project by London Sperry Eggplant baby, give me your answer, do. I’m half crazy, all for the love of you. A bubble of laughter comes from Michael’s little mouth. I continue while shaking the keys like maracas. You look so sweet, good enough to eat, In the grocery aisle for two.
Water moon by Samantha Soto I did not wake up and suddenly feel that I loved you. The only answer I can give you is that it happened gradually. Slowly, and unnoticed, the way the ocean turns rocks into sand. And you are an ocean, Hana. Gentle and quiet, yet powerful enough to sweep away any man or ship. I drowned in you a long time ago and I did not even know it.
Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier We are defined by our hardships, Hanaleiarihi, and how we face them. We are made stronger or weaker by those we hold closest to us.
Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig He has looked pain in the eye—and refused to let it make a monster of him.
We are not free by Traci Chee She cries, and Minnow gathers her to him. They put their arms around each other, and they know these aren’t the arms either of them need, but these are the arms they have, the only arms they have. They hold each other among Minnow’s drawings, among pieces of Twitchy Hashimoto, and they don’t let go.
Violet made of Thorns by Gina Chen "What are you doing?” “Eating three slices of cake and five slices of regret, what does it look like I’m doing?
This Place is still beautiful by Xixi Tian She told me to choose,” I say. “Between you and her.” I draw my knees to my chest like a little girl. “I was afraid of losing her. It was hard. But I was wrong to just drop you like that. Not fair to you or to Mama.”

He shakes his head. “I was ready to fight for us,” he says. “But you just let me go. The funny thing is, I loved you because you were brilliant and tough and I knew that one day you were probably going to be a senator or something because you set your mind and heart on everything you wanted to do. I loved your ambition and drive. I loved how you never backed down from anything, and I thought that would extend to me too. I believed it, all the way to the end.”

“I know. If I could go back in time and do it again, I would’ve chosen differently. I would’ve put on my shoes and walked out the door. I would’ve gone to your house for prom, spent time with your mom. Had dinner. Taken pictures. Tried to make her like me. I would’ve gone to prom with you. I would’ve held your hand, brought you home, introduced you to Mama instead of hiding you. I wish I could’ve.”
