I'm struggling to find how I feel about this book. Richard Powers is an incredibly powerful writer (The Overstory is my definite favorite book) and this novel shares a lot of his strengths and gorgeously written themes around conservation and community. I especially enjoyed reading about Evelyne's life and entanglement with the ocean, as well as the storyline surrounding Makatea's referendum. The islanders' quest in navigating AI was so genuine and felt present to today's global discourse. But at the same time, the book... drags. It took me months to get invested enough to pick it up for more than a couple of pages at at time. The storylines feel disconnected and the plot moves slowly. When the book finally picked up it got bizarre, with an ending that made me question the themes and discussions it had elegantly crafted. It also fell into the "billionares will save the world" trope within the last 3 pages, which made it fall apart. The book left me feeling confused and a little bit angry. Definitely read, and definitely critique.
