Ahhh I loved this so much! My second time reading it since I first read it in 2020. And yep as good as I thought, time to actually finish the series now!

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

It took me a long time to read this book. Not because it was bad by any means, I was just more interested in other stuff, namely playing Fire Emblem while listening to The Mortal Instruments audiobooks.

I had really unfairly high expectations for this book. Jennifer A. Nielsen's Ascendance Trilogy is one of my all-time favorite series. I devoured those books, and I honestly love them so so much.

This book didn't live up to my expectations (and how could it, really?) but I still really enjoyed it. Sage from the Ascendance Trilogy is one of my favorite protagonists as well, and much as I liked Nic, I kept (again, unfairly) comparing him to Sage, and as great as Nic was, I wasn't quite as fond of him as I am Sage.

Crispus though. What a little muffin. Please don't disappoint.

It's middle grade so it's a super fast and easy read. And I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the series and not taking a month to do it!
