The Jungle Books can be regarded as classic stories told by an adult to children. But they also constitute a complex literary work of art in which the whole of Kipling's philosophy of life is expressed in miniature. They are best known for the 'Mowgli' stories; the tale of a baby abandoned and brought up by wolves, educated in the ways and secrets of the jungle by Kaa the python, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the black panther. The stories, a mixture of fantasy, myth, and magic, are underpinned by Kipling's abiding preoccupation with the theme of self-discovery, and the nature of the 'Law'.

Fără a fi modificat radical evoluţia romanului european modern, contemporană cu o Virginia Woolf, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu rămâne în orice caz o mare reformatoare în literatura româ­nă, o fondatoare strălucită şi încă inegalată a prozei analitice, care a ştiut să pătrundă în abisul psihologiilor obscure, cu mij­loacele observaţiei şi ale sugestiei fiziologice. Asocierea din­tre sondajul interior şi numeroasele notaţii de comportament, la nivelul reactivităţii organice spontane, conferă analizelor aces­tei autoare o puternică originalitate de formulă literară. Forţa construcţiei, de o impresionantă anvergură, evocarea unei mulţimi de personaje, pe amplul spaţiu al mai multor mii de pagini, adau­gă spiritului analitic inventiv energiile unei imaginaţii narati­ve autentice, nutrită poate de o experienţă limitată şi de o ex­pertiză externă elementară, în schimb de un dar excepţional de autoanaliză şi de introspecţie extrem de nuanţată a conştiinţei, dar mai ales a subconştientului individual. Ultima parte a cărţii, Între vănturi, se situează, tipologic, între mai multe tipuri de roman active în epocă: romanul de medii sociale (despre Iaşiul postbelic, mahalagizat şi trivializat), romanul eseu (despre începuturile literare mature ale lui Dănuţ), romanul „rusesc” de dragoste, dintre Olguţa şi Vania, desfăşurat în decoruri internaţionale, romanul „gorkian” al lui Vania (reuşit, dar din păcate prea redus), romanul întrăinării şi cel universitar parizian al Monicăi şi Olguţei (însoţite, patern, de Alexandru Pallă). Abandonat vreme de câţiva ani, spaţiul idilic al moşiei va revenii pectaculos, deşi iluzoriu şi efemer, în prim-plan, după întoarcerea de la Paris a fetelor. Romanul Medelenilor are încă multe de spus noilor generaţii de cititori şi îşi aşteaptă, încă, adevărata reconsiderare critică. Dincolo de orice consideraţii tehnice, cartea este cel mai impresionant şi mai fermecător poem epic dedicat marilor vacanţe din întreaga noastră literatură, o carte-fanion a unei stări de spirit. Ceea ce organizează, subteran, materia acestui roman‑fluviu este trecerea timpului (biografic, social, istoric) şi a vârstelor umane, cu corolarul ei, dezvrăjirea lumii, descoperirea realului şi nevoia recuperării unui Paradis pierdut. Digresiunile de care s‑a făcut atâta caz nu reprezintă decât forme de amânare a trecerii timpului. Atmosfera Medelenilor revine tot mai rar în cadru, pe măsură ce, din fundal, se aude vuietul tot mai ameninţător al timpului distrugător, ca o Simfonie a Destinului (cu acţiune ciclică, „în buclă“). În timp ce moş Gheorghe agonizează la câteva sute de metri distanţă, domnul Deleanu încearcă (inutil) să îi reţină atenţia Olguţei, povestindu‑i din Cei trei muşchetari… PAUL CERNAT

Chiar de la intaiul volum, ulita copilariei, Ionel Teodoreanu apare ca un scriitor original, in posesiunea deplina a formulei sale.
