  • What makes a five star a five star?

I’m no stranger to star ratings. I have a Letterboxd account and I have two different reading log apps plus my reading journals, yet sometimes I think I am being too generous in my ratings. Some films I have given five star ratings to just because Lewis Pullman is in them and sometimes I’ve given a five star rating to a book just because it used the most stunning word or mentioned Mary Shelley in a chapter. Yet other times I can be so strict with my ratings and I was wondering how everyone else chooses how many stars something should get?
