aviifld commented on pandemonicnox's review of Convenience Store Woman
i’ve seen reviews of this book describe it as funny, and I just could not wrap my head around that?? (also my copy has a review from The Times which reads “quirky, memorable… it could only be Japanese” which feels microaggressive imo but i digress!) To me this is a very sad book! Keiko deserves better than the people around her, she deserves to be understood (even if she comes across a little mad to most people) and especially because most people seem to want to find a “cure” for her!! average experience of reading a Sayaka Murata book and thinking “wow this main character is very autistic coded!” 💀 I don’t think I enjoyed this one as much as I did Earthlings and I think that if I had read Convenience Store Woman first I might not be so quick to seek out other books by Murata, but having read Earthlings first, I felt like I could trust her direction (and I will definitely keep an eye out for Vanishing World when i can get my hands on it)
