    Artemisia Gentileschi (Illuminating Women Artists)
    4.0
    Enjoyment: 4.0Quality: 4.5Characters: Plot:

A comprehensive look into Gentileschi’s wide-spanning career with some great feminist analysis on her paintings. The comparison between her two versions of “Judith Slaying Holofernes” did a brilliant job of showing how much she improved as an artist. Artemisia Gentileschi was an incredible, strong-willed, talented woman and I’ll never get sick of learning more about her work. She’s a massive inspiration and paved the way for so many women artists.

“What would a better me paint? There is no new me, there is no old me, there’s just me, the same me, the whole time. Vanity, vanity, forcing your will on the world. Don’t try to make a stronger wind, you’ll wear yourself out. Build a better sail.”

“Sometimes, at night, in bed, before I fall asleep, I think about a poem I might write, someday, about my heart, says the heart.”

A beautiful poetry compilation on artistry and identity, creative processes, perfectionism, and why we feel the need to pick up a paintbrush in such crazy times. As a painter myself, I felt a lot of my thoughts on my own creative process were put onto the page which made everything feel so much deeper. Brilliant uses of the paint colors as symbolism as well! The Way The Light Reflects, The Language of the Birds, The Museum, Self-Portrait Against Red Wallpaper, and Turpentine were among my favorites, and the recurring motif of the disembodied head was particularly interesting in the lead up to the fragment on Caravaggio in the middle of the collection.
