    English translation below!

English: Because I saw that the book is being translated, I thought I would translate this review for any non-German speakers who might be interested in the future!

What a book! It fascinated, surprised, moved me, often alluring and also repulsing.

Although denoted as a "novel", this is clearly an autofictional work, with relationships to and between mothers as its centerpiece, as much as the relationship to oneself, to queer bodies and realities. The form of this book is particularly interesting in this context; as little as the writer do the form and style follow conventions and expectations, moving between various narrative voices and perspectives fluently, is written at times in first, at times in second, at times in third person. The language used therein could not be more different, moving between academic, crass, and highly poetic and gorgeous, between High-German, Swiss-German, English, and millenial queer-isms, always authentic and captivating.

Especially the second part left me in awe and moved me deeply. The tender emotionality of this part stands out particularly and brings the poetry of the title, cover, and central themes of the book out.

Towards the end, the book fascinated me a little less, probably because many of the question marks that the story and the form of the book had brought up were answered too clearly. Maybe also because I felt like there was too much meta commentary which I, in places, perceived as a bit cringey. I feel like the story could have stood for itself which is why, in the end, this is not getting 5 stars, even though I was at times convinced that that would be my final rating! I didn't give a rating for character or plot because the autobiographical parts made this feel inappropriate.

I can highly recommend this book, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to any future works of Kim de l'Horizon!

aah thanks so much bea!! 🥹 I'm ngl, the cover is what drew me into the book as well initially!! I love that statue (Dafne and Apollo), I even saw it irl a few years back - and together with the colours, it's just so attention-grabbing. Was nice to discover there is a lot of intentionality behind those choices. and yesss, the language is so interesting! The Swiss German is usually just in specific words, but there are lots of subtle changes in the different narrative voices and also lots of gorgeous wordplay that I'm really curious to see how it's translated!

this is a fantastic review of this book! I also really loved to see how the author used gender neutral language here which added such an interesting layer to the way language was used generally to comment on the main themes! I also love the quote you pulled out, sums up the book super well :)

And here is what I do instead:
I break the circle of children who kill their parents in order to be free, to become themselves. I don't kill my parents. I am giving birth to my mothers.

Blutbuch by nonbinary author Kim de l'Horizon is an autofictional novel about generational trauma, self-discovery, and gender expression. It won the German Book Prize in 2022.

This book plays a lot with language. To begin with, the German language is particularly difficult when it comes to gender-neutral expression, so it is refreshing to read a book that takes the effort to tackle that throughout a full novel. Then past that, the author uses traditional Swiss-German dialect, modern queer talk, and even English to different effects, which showcases how much language changes depending on person and subject. There is something very engaging about a modern voice wielding the language of older generations to make an observation about different lifetimes. The clash of different jargons as the clash of different experiences and perceptions.
The text keeps evolving and changing form as the author seeks to uncover some family secrets, discovers their family's history, and comes to grips with their own relationship to the past and their relatives. Throughout the anecdotes, essayesque self-reflection, and lengthy ancestor biographies, it can seem somewhat aimless at points but ultimately manages to tie it all up very well to make the picture complete.

Blutbuch is unique, it's extremely personal, and it's timely without leaving behind the past. A symbol for the everchanging zeitgeist and a representation of the different kinds of struggles for one's own identity without antagonizing the past.

Queer in jeglicher Form.
