Are We Anxious & Idiotic?

A few friends and I chose this book for a group read. We read it one at a time and pass the book along to each other. I was the first, and — perhaps — that was one of the reasons I finished the book.

Don’t get me wrong, the book is great, and I ended up crying. But I started with a very fixed idea of how the story would unfold, and the author decided to take a different path, which left me quite disappointed. Possibly, my anxiety and expectations were speaking louder at that moment.

After I decided to let the reading take its course, I got to know more about the characters, and I still find myself debating this narrative choice of revealing small pieces of these people to us. At one point, I knew so much and, at the same time, so little about them, yet I still didn’t know anyone’s name.

We judge someone’s life based on a single moment when our lives cross. However, like every human being, each person in this story is complex; when we think we know their intentions and their past, we are presented with a completely different truth. (The narrator makes a point of leaving a few brief mysteries.)

In the end, we really are all strangers, with similar stories and moments. We may even be going through the same difficulties or happiness, but — and fortunately — we will only happen to cross paths somewhere.

Somos ansiosos & idiotas?

Eu e alguns amigos escolhemos esse livro para uma leitura conjunta, um de cada vez, e vamos passando o livro entre nós. Fui a primeira e — talvez — essa tenha sido uma das razões que me fizeram acabar o livro.

Não me entenda mal, o livro é ótimo e acabei chorando. Mas comecei com uma ideia muito fixa de como a história iria se desenrolar, e o autor resolveu seguir por outro caminho, o que me deixou bastante decepcionada. Possivelmente, minha ansiedade e expectativa estavam falando mais alto naquele momento.

Depois que resolvi deixar a leitura seguir, fui conhecendo mais sobre os personagens e ainda fico debatendo essa jogada do narrador de nos revelar pequenas partes dessas pessoas. Em dado momento, sabia tanto e, ao mesmo tempo, tão pouco sobre eles, mas ainda seguia sem ter o nome de ninguém.

Julgamos a vida de alguém com base em um único momento em que nossas vidas se cruzam. Entretanto, como todo ser humano, cada um nessa história é complexo; quando achamos que sabemos suas intenções e seu passado, somos apresentados a uma verdade totalmente diferente. (O narrador faz questão de deixar alguns breves mistérios.)

No final, somos realmente todos desconhecidos, com histórias e momentos parecidos. Até podemos estar passando pelas mesmas dificuldades ou felicidades, mas — e com sorte — vamos somente nos esbarrar em algum lugar.
