Some beautifully observed details - and so precisely captured:
"She took off her hat and pushed her hair about. It was short and grey and regularly waved, as if a hand had been spread over it then squeezed."
And on behaviour too:
"None wished to appear greedy, or obsessed by food: but food made the breaks in the day, and menus offered little choosing, and satisfactions and disappointments, as life once had."
