I loved the world this created; the matriarchal society, the magic system, the different queendoms were all very interesting. This book was propulsive and engaging, but also quiet and thought-provoking. The characters are full, complicated, and morally gray (with some clear villains too). I really loved (and hated) these characters, G. R. Macallister really puts you through the wringer with some of the things that happen to them 😩. The political chess game everyone is playing was next level! I am hoping even more gets revealed and explored in the next books. Overall, this was a unique and well-done epic fantasy and start to a series!
My only minor issues: one of the villains in the story is too powerful and it’s not well explained how they came to be that powerful. Secondly, the pov chapters for this person gave some key things away that I think would have served the story better through the plot unfolding.
