The Autobiography of Malcolm X

This month it was important to me to intentionally pick books by black authors and this one was an easy five star rating for me.
I started reading it thinking it was just another romcom, but it wasn't just romance. There was so much depth in this book. Every character felt fully realized, layered, and human. I loved learning about the characters as people, realizing how systematic barriers show up in everyday decisions, and how success doesn't just magically erase injustice. Love exists in this book alongside activism, ambition, exhaustion, and responsibility.
Love didn't break into this story and take over, it was earned and it existed alongside their barriers, established lives, and generational responsibility. And that is so real.
Reading this during Black History Month added another layer for me. The book doesn’t reduce struggle to a plot device. It shows how even when people are educated, driven, successful, and committed to uplifting their communities, they are still navigating systems that weren’t built with them in mind. I truly am grateful for the growth this book offered me as an ally.
The writing was beautiful without being indulgent, emotional without being manipulative, and romantic without losing its grounding in reality. This wasn’t just a love story — it was a story about responsibility, resilience, and the complexity of loving someone while carrying the world on your shoulders.
