What is there to say? It's an origin bible for my favorite fictional character of all time and a damn spectacular one at that. Who gets to say they get that in their lifetime?? I burned two highlighters on this book trying to note everything that felt relevant to all future forms of Glinda as they exist because in true Maguire fashion every sentence feels important if you let it. Honestly very cool that he now gets to do to his OWN Wicked mythos what Wicked was to The Wizard of Oz because it's the thing I think he's best at as an author- inventing precursors to well known and well loved stories that go nowhere you could predict and expand your brain tenfold by forcing you to draw your own conclusions. I was drawn back constantly to Elphaba's description of Glinda in Wicked Years #1 "The thing is I have become fond of Galinda myself. Behind her starry-eyed love of herself there is a mind struggling to work. She does think about things. When her mind is really working, she could, if led, think on you - even, I suspect, somewhat fondly. I suspect. I don’t know. But when she slides back into herself, I mean into the girl who spends two hours a day curling that beautiful hair, it’s as if the thinking Galinda goes into some internal closet and shuts the door. Or as if she’s in hysterical retreat from things that are too big for her." This book not only proves this thesis but proves Elphaba is one of the only people who ever truly saw and respected Glinda, and the one who loved her by and far the most. In the immortal words of Jon M. Chu- It's about the girls, stupid. Always has been always will be.
