    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I decided to DNF this book.

    1. The villain uses the term “my dear” almost every other sentence. In some chapters, literally every other sentence. Maybe it works better in text but it’s grating on audio.
    2. I can’t do 💩. I wish I would have known beforehand. The violent homophobia and assault was enough. The shit on the walls was enough. I did not need the fecal matter to be included in the attack.
    3. I read the reviews and I’m quite certain I’m right before a “violent rape” scene. Coupled with the above and my feelings so far, it’s gonna be a no for me, dawg.

About to DNF due to excessive “my dear”s.

Utterly fantastic! Reads like a gory camp horror film. The villains are caricatures of Americans- selfish, capitalist, egotistical, lusty, stupid. I was not expecting a monster book but rather a “weather horror,” so the monster from the sea aspect was a pleasant surprise. This book is a little cheesy, a lot gory, and I love an octogenarian MC.

This is a me problem and I don’t think a genuine issue with the book. I feel some type of way about male authors writing young women to begin with, and after the first hour of this audiobook, it just wasn’t doing anything for me. I normally really like body horror (V. Castro’s Queen of the Cicadas haunts me) so I was disappointed I couldn’t get past the characters.

“She had once believed she would break the curse of generations of women before her, and start anew. There was no denying her progress. And yet, she couldn’t help but feel that she hadn’t truly changed anything.”
