I don't think words can describe how well written this book is. I'm going to try, but again, I don't think I will ever be able to encapsulate everything this amazing book has to offer.

We follow a family tree starting with two half sisters and how their lives have shaped their offspring in the future and so forth. Each chapter is a new generation. The reader is introduced to so many well rounded characters. Even though each character only receives one chapter, they are so thorough and multifaceted. Gyasi has beautiful prose and tackles deep themes such as colonialism, the slave trade, generational trauma, and resilience. I would also include that it talks about immigration and what it means to come from a family of immigrants in a land that feels so foreign. I was enthralled with Gyasi's ability to depict grief and rage in so many different ways. The book may be difficult to read as there is graphic scenes of the slave trade in Ghana.

I appreciate that this story disects the cultural, political, economical, and social history of slavery. It also expresses how addiction, incarceration, and racism is so deeply rooted. It was truly one of the most, and still is, a heinous crime to society.

This is a book that is at most 300 pages and I would consider it an essential read. Gyasi is just so powerful in this book. I was wrecked throughout it. The ending makes it all come full circle, and while people argue it was anticlimatic, I think it speaks to people when your family is born from a different country. It hit different.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkeley for allowing me to read this ARC!

I love a good historical fantasy. This was such an interesting book. It follows the life of Henry VII and his tumultuous marriages. He's just as an unsavory character in the book as he is in history. I was fascinated with the idea with feminist witches trying to change the course of the future for women. It follows specific events in history. The two main characters are Anne Boelyn and Catherine of Aragon. We follow their adventure through their coven and through history. The story also goes through Henry VII’s other wives.

Although the storyline was interesting, the writing still lacked some experience. Most of the time it felt like the author was telling the reader what happened rather than having them experience it through the book. The characters are what shine the most in the story. They're all entertaining, albeit very tropey. Overall, this is a light book I would recommend people read when they want something entertaining and easy to read. It would be a good palette cleanser.
