I really appreciate Green’s inclusion of Indigenous experiences with TB, and honestly he barely scratched the surface. To add even more horrible context, First Nations and Inuit people did not just disproportionally contract and die from TB, but the Canadian and provincial health authorities also used the illness as a means to further their attempts of assimilation. Remote and far north patients were sent to “Indian hospitals” and sanatoriums hundreds to thousands of kilometers from their home communities where they were kept for treatment, which often included painful experimental interventions. Similar to residential school policies, their hair was cut for “hygiene” and the nutrition offered was inadequate. They were given limited access to communicate with their families while away, often spending months or years without seeing or talking to loved ones. They were punished for speaking their first language, referred to by an ID number or a government name. If they died there was a good chance their bodies were never returned home or their burial location recorded. If they survived they could inherit lasting psychological pain, distrust of the medical system, or if they had a uterus they might have found themselves forcibly sterilized under the guise of treatment, often without giving consent or having knowledge of the procedure. The horrors go on and on. This chapter could be a whole book for how the health system has been used to control and dehumanize non-white people.
