To my surprise, it is actually not that hard to tell characters apart and to remember who’s who. I do have some issues with the places, though, also because the directions often don’t line up? They’ll say town XY is in the west, but then you’d look at the map and it would be in the east? Very confusing.
What I don’t like so far are the female characters. Why are they all either wives or girls who were forced to work in brothels? Such a big cast of character, and barely a single important woman. Have we considered fleshing out a female character beyond what she can give to men?

Very interesting! Sometimes the author inserted himself a bit too much, but it thankfully didn’t happen that often and he never lost himself in it. Plus, I really appreciated his emphasis that you can’t just look at languages like English or Spanish if you wanted to make a stance about how languages worked; you also had to look at indigenous languages.
