Going into this book from a friend's recommendation when talking about stories where the author makes choices left & right that you didn't expect and boy oh boy my friend wasn't lying. Some turns in the moment made me rather mad, but they made it somehow more realistic as nothing is ever that simple/easy.
There sure were a few plotholes and some of the characters' behaviour made me question if I'm reading about the correct character or jumped a few pages. However, I'm guessing that a lot of these points will be explained in the following books.
I enjoyed Laia and Elias' character evolution. From time to time I had to remind myself that nearly all of those characters are still kids or young adults hence the things they lived through made it much more shocking. Laia especially portrayed some amazing self-realization of her own strength and became someone being able to change things for her and the people she cares about. For the coming books I hope that either, they will focus a bit more on the side-characters or maybe a third narrating character, maybe Helene? Pls a bit less individualism and more collectivism though.
Overall, I struggled between giving this book 3.5 or 4.0 stars, but some characters pissed me off too much.

"their story is just as much the story of the Cold War as any other is, certainly more so than any story of the Cold War that is focused primarily on white people in the United States and Europe."
