'Villa des Roses is een schets naar de natuur, dat wil zeggen de beschrijving van een pension de famille waar ik 1906-1907 in Parijs geleefd heb.' Zo omschrijft Willem Elsschot zijn debuutroman. In de vele recensies van het boek, dat in 1913 verscheen, is de stijl van de schrijver een terugkerend onderwerp van lof. Naar eigen zeggen is Willem Elsschot (pseudoniem van Alfons de Ridder) Villa des Roses gaan schrijven door toedoen van 'een 45-jarige juffrouw Van der Tak', een collega van hem bij de Schiedamse werf Gusto: 'Ze wilde altijd dat ik de verhalen die ik vertelde, onder andere over het familie-pension in Parijs waar ik gewoond had, opschreef. Ik sprak nog Vlaams, weet u; en dat vermaakte haar. Wel driehonderd keer heeft ze gezegd:"Fons, waarom schrijf je dat niet eens op."' Het is maar goed dat Elsschot haar advies ter harte nam: zijn roman over een verlopen pension in Parijs behoort tot de meest gelezen en geprezen boeken van de Nederlandse literatuur. In een sobere, terloopse stijl weet Elsschot de gasten van Villa des Roses onvergetelijk te portretteren.

De Avonden vertelt het verhaal van Frits van Egters, die in de donkere decemberdagen van vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zich een houding probeert te geven tegenover zijn ouders en vrienden. Over alles ligt een grijze waas van melancholie, en met zijn eigenzinnige gevoel voor humor probeert hij door het pantser van de verveling te breken. In het ontroerende slothoofdstuk komt hij tot het louterende inzicht dat hij door te kijken en te observeren de zinloosheid heeft bezworen: 'Het is gezien, het is niet onopgemerkt gebleven.'

Kleine, verstilde roman beeldt het conflict uit tussen twee manieren van leven die niet samengaan. Aan de ene kant staat de ingenieur van de suikerfabriek, Willem Bake, een aardige, hardwerkende man uit Europa die vooral naar de toekomst kijkt en die vooruit wil komen in de wereld. Aan de andere kant staat Si-Bengkok, een mismaakte Javaanse jongen die mensen en dieren betovert met zijn fluitspel. Hij herinnert Bake aan iets dat hij diep in zijn hart wel weet, maar dat in zijn hardwerkende bestaan steeds meer op de achtergrond raakt: dat hij door in de toekomst te leven onherroepelijk iets kwijtraakt wat voor geen geld te koop is. De twee sluiten een noodlottige vriendschap. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de tijd van het Nederlands koloniaal bestuur, tegen het prachtige decor van oud-Java. Het boek is ook te lezen als een politieke roman die op een genuanceerde manier het Nederlands kolonialisme veroordeelt. Orpheus in de dessa geldt als een van de hoogtepunten van de Nederlandse literatuur.
