In her acknowledgements at the end of this book, Alina Bellchambers expresses that she wrote the book that she always wanted to read when she was younger; a book of badass FMCs, court intrigue, betrayal, and forbidden romance. I do believe that she's scratched that itch for me as well.
Both Mira and Scarlett are excellent main characters, both with intriguing points of view that both complement and contrast each other. Both with nothing to lose and everything to gain, their opposing moralities and loyalties make for interesting interactions and heart-wrenching betrayals. Scarlett is especially refreshing- she is cut-throat and unapologetic. It's cool to see a woman who isn't portrayed as being weighted down by her emotions or simpering to the affections of a man. She lets nothing stop her, and puts her needs before everyone else's. I fell in love with her ruthlessness.
The world-building was great too; Bellchambers gives us an interesting and unique magic system, and the distinction between the Orders is clear and fascinating.
At times the pacing of the book can be a little slow, even considering the amount of time-jumps in places, but the book's final chapters race towards a harrowing conclusion that kept me turning page after page. Certainly there is a lot of set-up in Order of Masks, so I'm interested to see how it all pays off in Weight of Crowns. At this point, I dont know who I'm rooting for more...
