I’m currently also listening to The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and noticed he sort of answers a question that the foreword of this book focuses on - how were people ‘easily’ led to their deaths with little resistance? Why didn’t SK take down as many SS as possible if they were going to die anyway? Why did Jewish people ‘refuse’ to believe in the camps?

This foreword made me quite uncomfortable because while I understand the questioning and a desire to understand how to protect oneself in a possible similar situation, it read mostly as victim blaming. There is a sentence somewhere along the lines of “Anne Frank died because her parents refused to believe in Auschwitz.” I would be more inclined to believe that she died because the Nazis wanted her dead and the German population had brought them to the power they needed to achieve that.

Frederick Douglass (at around 83% in the audiobook on Apple Books) makes a comment about how as a slave, the times he thought most about freedom and a way to achieve it was when he was in a more ‘comfortable’ situation. When someone is enslaved and being put through brutal punishments and unending work it’s hard to move mentally beyond that, let alone physically. You can hardly criticise someone constantly burdened by very intense oppression that regularly manifests in physical violence for not ‘fighting back’.

I was really glad to stumble upon this connection that feels like an answer provided almost exactly 100 years earlier. And maybe the reasoning for the tone of the foreword will become more clear throughout Nyiszli’s account, but it felt important to consider how each form of oppression doesn’t exist in isolation, and context for why people may act a certain way in one situation can be provided by another.
