H.G. Parry’s writing is so immersive, magical, and timeless. I love how reading this felt like stepping into a portal—where it felt like you were transported to Camelot with Arthur, under the lake with Morgan le Fay, or changing into a mouse with Merlin. I love the way this played with time, and used magic as a way of bridging two historical timelines—the fall of Camelot and World War II. I would recommend this to anyone who loved the Everlasting, or who is looking for unique historical fantasy with a dash of romance.

“That’s the trouble with destiny, and with despair. Both make it too easy to tell yourself you had no choice.”

3.5 or 4? - My favorite part was how this was structured, and how it was a story being told to us through one of the characters. I actually enjoyed being a little lost and not having everything spelled out. That being said, I found that there wasn’t enough page time or characterization for me to be thoroughly invested.

Rabbit’s repeated question, “Do you understand?” has become one of my favorite parts of this book. The more stories she tells, the more it feels like she’s asking something much bigger than whether Chih is following along.

At this point it feels like understanding isn’t about knowing the facts. Chih can record names, events, and objects, but Rabbit seems to be asking whether they understand the people behind them. The sacrifices, grief, love, anger, and survival that history often leaves out.

I also love how the question keeps turning back on me as a reader. Every time Rabbit asks it, my answer is the same as Chih’s: I understand a little more than before, but not completely. And maybe that’s the point.

Me whenever she asks that question:
