She just casually drops these little gems of insight about the immigrant experience and it makes me tear up every time. Elif’s writing is always so gentle and heartfelt. Like a warm embrace to soothe all worries.

Thoughts from 9% (page 37) - An Offering

"That, I think, is the power of ceremony: it marries the mundane to the sacred. The water turns to wine, the coffee to a prayer. The material and the spiritual mingle like grounds mingled with humus, transformed like steam rising from a mug into the morning mist.

What else can you offer the earth, which has everything? What else can you give but something of yourself? A homemade ceremony, a ceremony that makes a home."

Wow, wow, wow. I continue to be blown away by this book. I was sitting on my back porch with my morning coffee when I read this essay. It felt serendipitous. Enjoying a new essay in this book to start off my days has really become its own ceremony for me. I am excited to see what treasures I find in tomorrow's reading. 💓

"If all the world is a commodity, how poor we grow. When all the world is a gift in motion, how wealthy we become."

I'm already loving this book and appreciating how it is altering my perception of things.

A great friend of mine gifted this book to me a few years ago as a birthday present. I'm so glad I have finally gotten around to reading it.

I'm taking it slowly so I can savor the wisdom within its pages. It's been my morning companion each day, reading one new essay with my coffee, and then reflecting on it before the day really begins. It's been a wonderful new routine for me!
