Attention shadowhunter fans! š¤š”āØļø Obviously, books will always be better than the movies/series ā BUT, do we think the TV series or the movie did a better job of representing The Mortal Instruments? š

I just added every single book I own (physical or audio) to PB and grouped them as finished, paused (which I'm taking as I got more than a few chapters in and didn't dnf but haven't gone back to yet), or tbr, and then did the math. only 54% of my library went into the "finished" category.
before I did this I estimated 65% read. my partner reckons when you own over 300 books, anything over 50% read is impressive, but idk ... I feel like that's a lot of neglected books!
how are your shelves measuring up, folks? or do you not even worry about this?

Opening put me off, never regained any traction. Found the characters unlikeable. I can do dark but this felt unjustified, wasnāt for me.

Not really sure how to start this conversation, but as Iāve got a little more confident on here I wanted to ask for wider perspective/ advice on perhaps a niche conversation. Itās a little personal but Iād really appreciate compassionate advice.
Iām a repeat rereader and movie watcher, I have found myself over the past couple of years seeking out ācomfortā over new adventures because it feels safe. Thereās no unexpected emotional turbulence. It began at a time when I was severely unwell but I canāt break the cycleā¦
I was wondering if anyone else also experiences this block on pushing themselves into new reads, and whether anyone perhaps has advice?
I LOVE reading. Always have. Escaping into a different world is one of my favourite things to do. I curate TBRs, buy books all the time. Itās still a major part of my life. I know I will love reading again if I just DO IT but I canāt get over the first hurdles, when I do, if I stop I struggle to start again. Iāve just found I constantly block myself. Iāll sit and scroll for hours trying to choose what to read with no end result. I donāt know, is there anyone out there who relates?

I was left confused by how bad this was considering my high expectations from the large push to read it.

Found this so incredibly disappointing after all the hype.

You don't kill the main character, you just don't. This book seemed rushed to finish the whole way, it didn't vibe the way the others did. I can never forgive an author for killing the main character for shock value or hype. Not when you invest 3 books into caring about these characters. She didn't even execute it well - it didn't need to happen to prove her point about selflessness, and the reasoning still doesn't make sense to me. I loved the first two, but now I really regret having even started this series.

I really enjoyed this book when I was younger, was a favourite reread and I loved the movie but not some of the missing pieces (as can be expected). I had no idea about anything āmormonā when I read this, same as Twilight. (From UK) Didnāt even realise they were the same authors because I didnāt pay attention to things like that then. Having heard about some of the authorsā¦more questionable draft plot lines for the ending of Breaking Dawn, itās so obvious thatās where the idea for this book came from. Considering picking it up again to see if it makes the same impact and I will add an updated review if I doā¦

Was baited by the dragons and honestly, theyāre the best characters in the book. It was predictable. But they felt like cut out characters that are slapped into every āpopularā fantasy people rave about nowadays. Very meh, couldnāt finish and wonāt now the authors views have come to light.

I could write a dissertation on the harm this book and the wilful ignorant fans who refuse to acknowledge certain scenes for what they are. Even going against the author to defend so ferociously. The BIZARRE wave of reviews that made me feel like I was in some fever dream because there was simply no way. And yes, I do read dark, Iāve read darker than this. The dark wasnāt the problem here, though there were many issues with it.
I didnāt think Zade having no reason or āsob storyā to enjoy killing and hunting people was some ācool alternative.ā It made his character lack depth. It didnāt carve him into āa hero with one exception, her.ā He wasnāt fleshed out enough if this was the intention. I just didnāt like him.
The scene completely threw me out of the world. Iām still disgusted itās referenced and repeated so many times now. It was uncomfortable being in her mind, to simply read it. I pushed on because I love dark romance it this was soo hyped and I should have DNFd the moment I wanted to because nothing following was worth it.
Thereās one scene when he picks her up for some party and his immediate demand AND her submission completely shattered a lot of my trust for where the story was going. It wasnāt hot it was gross and he needed a punch in the throat. I donāt like shock and domination purely for impact, itās lazy.
Itās been years and I can still get heated over seeing commentary of this book, and the pushing Zade as the ultimate book boyfriend. Drives me fucking nuts. Overall this book felt like it was TRYING to be dark, rather than simply covering dark themes immersed in a substantial plot WITH romance.

Less of that āš¼ cannot explain how much I disliked this book and everyone in it. People really need to stop throwing around āenemies to loversā some people are just assholes.

Gave up with trying to care about these characters. I tried to read this years ago, i canāt precisely remember what made it fall flat, but it did.
