A quarter of the way through and I’m still hung up on the halal-meat-for-the-sake-of-capitalism thing. While they didn’t expressly say “halal human”, they essentially described it as such with it being the result of demands for “undamaged” leathers and meat that didn’t taste bad. As a non-Muslim who has seen those points being made about the benefits of buying halal regardless of faith, and agreeing, I’m not sure how to feel about this. Kinda feels like being called out for performative animal rights views… could also be missing some key details about Islam and halal eating that would help me separate that part of the story from my VERY casual understanding of Islam.

Also curious if there’s any Muslim folks in the forum who’ve read this book and if they’re comfortable sharing their opinion on it? Not a set up! Genuinely respectful of your opinions, and Salam Aleikum in advance 💕😅

Like I'm not shoooocked but I AM THOUGH. I really was trying to understand Marcos as a character and every time I think I'm gaining just a taaaaad more empathy for him, he goes and does the most horrible thing he can do 🫠

Like his relationship with Marisa is somewhat understandable; we all have those family members that don't really question the way the world is, and it's sad that she doesn't help out with their dad, but ohmygosh would it kill him to try?! Like he barely tries to understand why Cecilia needs space right now, and he barely tries to understand why Marisa would want more of a relationship with him after Leo's death.

I thought this plot was gonna go in a whole different direction, but I clearly forgot this was man in a horror book
