Creepy crawling vines, sentient mushrooms, or a killer forest; no matter what shape they take, plants and fungi play a main part in these horror novels.

I really enjoyed this book and by the end of it, I was crying my eyes out. This book made me realize YA is no longer for me as I was dragging to get through the book and was cringing at much of the narration due to it being told from a teenager’s perspective. Despite that, the book was well written, touching, and healed something inside me from growing up as a lesbian with a Christian Latina mother. The author did a good job touching on the complexity of Christianity (Catholicism) and queerness within one’s self and one’s family. I appreciated the trigger warnings so be mindful of those if deciding to pick up the book. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because at times I felt the plot was clunky and some of the character development threw me off, with Yamilet’s parents in particular. I do feel the ending was a bit rushed as well.

I think I may be past the YA style in my life. 😔 Ten years ago I would’ve ate this writing style up but now I’m cringing every 5 seconds trying to get through the book. I’m really loving the plot and the representation is truly beautiful. But the writing style, I just can’t. I’m going to finish though

Whether you love to hate or hate to love 'em, these literary bad girls are anything but well-behaved. *Disclaimer: we do not literally support the illegal and oft cruel behavior of these protagonists (usually); we support the authors bold enough to write them (always).
