Post from the Bundok: A Hinterland History of Filipino America forum
I had know idea that the word "boondocks" was derived from the Filipino word "bundok". "Bundok" literally means mountain, but was used by American troops during the war to describe their bewilderment when fighting in guerrilla warfare across Northern Luzon. Nowadays it's used refer to remote non-urban areas.

Upon finishing this book, I'll say it once more. Not all men, but it's ALWAYS a man. đ€Ą
Disturbing and important read to start the new year off with. I felt a lot of things while reading this; while it reignited all pre-existing anger, disgust, and sadness I had toward the rise of AI for incel & rape culture, and technocracy, it also reinforced the notion that we really do need to advocate and fight for better tech regulation and protection of all women and children as emerging technologies develop and evolve globally.

In the middle of the sex robot chapter (but this applies to whole book tbh) and with each page I read, I keep repeating to myself it's not all men, but it's always a man. Very disturbing. đŁđ
Also one really good point that stood out to me while reading this is the idea that we don't hold virtual businesses/tech companies to the same standard as physical ones in terms of safety, and they use not even a drop of their revenue when claiming they lack the resources. I really liked the analogy comparing virtual services to food services in that tech companies will say that they can't invest in user protection or moderation (especially for women, minors, and minorities) but when like a restaurant for example says that they can't guarantee that their customers won't get poisoned by their product, that results in their clientele responding differently and possibly creating enough outcry to tarnish a business's reputation and shut it down.
Ofc, the difference in response is due to the fact that women are never taken seriously, the industry is dominated by wealthy cis white tech bros, and several other factors, but put in this perspective, it helps to recognize it was never for the technicalities or the lack of resources. They're just greedy and have no ambition to try but won't hesitate to hype up their technology as revolutionary. They're okay with women believing that victimization is just something that they should expect to happen to them.
