    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A fun fantasy romp with a novel world and unconventional protagonist. It's refreshing to see our female lead, Ophelia, not falling into the not-like-other-girls trope that segues into the discovery of her being beautiful-all-along. Her characterisation from the first book continues on with a great sense of development that doesn't feel contrived or inauthentic. I'm genuinely interested to see where she goes next. The biggest drawback of this series, for me, though is the prose itself. I'm not sure if it has to do with the actual writing or the translation, but I lean on the side of translation. There were obvious issues in the first book that are absent here, but something about the way the story comes across in English feels rather cartoonish in a way that's tonally disjointed. I'd love to know what people who have read this in the original French think about the prose, though.

There's something about the way this book is written that holds it back from fulfilling its potential. I wonder if it's an issue of translation, but since I don't know how to read French, there's no point of comparison.
