Iām literally on the first page peopleā¦and itās hilarious and really fucking sad but amazing so far. The prologue was a great hook. Canāt wait to read the rest - Iāve read a few celebrity books (Michelle Obama or Gabrielle Union type) BUT this is interesting because I loved iCarly & Iām curious as to how the child actors lived through that š„¹š¤

I really loved this book. I think the premise and the mystery itself were well done, and honestly, having a group of elderly British people cause chaos and manipulate their way into a murder case was hilarious to me. And as a person who wants to spend my golden years causing chaos in a retirement home, this book has given me something to aspire to š
For characters, I think the complementary contrast of Joyce and Elizabeth's personalities stole the show, individually and together they were just amazing. There are certain characters and character dynamics I hope will be better fleshed out as the series goes on, but for a first book, there is a good foundation, and I am not too upset by it.
Overall, I think the book managed to balance humour and serious tones quite well. There are lots of heartfelt moments and things that made me teary-eyed, and just as many, if not more, funny as hell chaotic moments.
I will definitely continue with the series. Probably at a slower pace, as I think this is a good style to use as a break between other books, and might be too much if I essentially binge the series.
(More than once, this reminded me of the movie RED, just with a British murder mystery twist instead of spies. And with that, it made me laugh when I found out Helen Mirren is in the movie adaptation of this book, as she also plays a retired spy in the movie RED.)

so good. ransom riggs is one of my faves for a reason. he is amazing at world building and introducing concepts that seem otherworldly. i cannot wait for the next book.
