so far, really enjoying this intelligent and compassionate look at how girls experience sex & sexuality in the modern world (i.e.: the patriarchy). was worried going in that this might take a conservative/dismissive tone, but orenstein is refreshingly sex-positive

genuinely enjoying this so far. im not sure exactly where greer is going to take things, but she definitely has a direction in mind.
a thought: annie’s body is separate from her mind, in a way. she’s wanted for what her body can give to her ‘owner’, and her thoughts and actions are only considered in relation to doug’s desires. but she goes deeper than that, though…

the appeal of these robots is that they feel like people while still being at their owner’s complete whims. thus, the people who own them can still maintain a veneer of kindness towards their partners/housekeepers, but under the surface they’re selfish and controlling. we’re starting to see this with doug’s behaviour, his punishment and manipulation of annie

‘maybe you should talk to someone’ is an emotionally evocative, intelligent, and competently written memoir about the intricacies of therapy, based on gottlieb’s experiences from both sides of the therapist’s chair.
gottlieb’s compassion for everyone she talks about abounds in this book; i was so moved by her devotion to seeing the goodness in the people she worked with (like john). this compassion is a key component in her treatment of the emotions in this book. really, a true testament to her authorial prowess is the fact that this book made me connect so deeply with the people on these pages that i teared up several times, and eventually was brought to full tears in the book’s resolution.
gottlieb’s points were all incredibly clear-eyed and introspective, each time considering the complexities of the contexts within which all of her patients were situated. i also really loved how she would reference her wealth of external texts and psychological ideas throughout the work. gottlieb said that being a writer is part of who she is, and i believe it; it shows in the quality of her prose, at once gently mirthful and emotionally inviting.
this book found me at the right time. it was immensely comforting for me, and i really needed to immerse myself in something so emotionally intelligent and rewarding after some recent experiences. definitely a new favourite.
