If you are a DCC fan and prefer fantasy over sci-fi, you may be disappointed. I personally much prefer sci-fi, so this story is RIGHT up my alley. I haven't really had a book that kept me up reading well past bed time in some time. This one starts off a little slow, so initially was easy to put down. Once I hit 40% or so, I didn't put it down until I finished.
There is humor, of course, but this book isn't laugh out loud like DCC. Given the plot, that's entirely appropriate. There is an AI, but it's been a nanny & teacher to our main character his entire life, which gives the book a fair amount of the humor.
There's also social commentary & plot points relevant to current events, both within the AI spaces and geopolitical events. Here is where the book is most like DCC, where you have to look beneath the seemingly inane outer shell to get to the good stuff.
If you liked Bobiverse, you'll like this one.

Still not entirely hooked on the characters here. I think it's mainly because I'm a sci-fi person, not a fantasy person. 🤷🏼♀️
