hafsaandherbooks commented on seema's review of Abscond
This was a shockingly moving slice-of-life story considering it's length (under 40 pages). It spans only two days but packs quite a punch, touching on coming of age, family, friendship, community, grief, religion, and purpose. My first read by Abraham Verghese and unlikely to be my last. One suggestion is to read this in one sitting, as I think that will best foster the intended emotional impact.

I don't even know what happened. The first 60% was alright and the vibes were interesting enough but wow I hated the last 40% viscerally. I had to force myself to finish it so I could find out what the crazy cliffhanger people were talking about was. Alex and Ophelia's relationship made very little sense to me. Their entire dynamic was weird and kind of icky, especially with Ophelia's background. Also the lustiness felt very out of place. I feel like the author was trying to mix dark academia with a thriller with dark romance with fluffy romance with found family in a way that just did not work. that's not to say such a thing is impossible but here it failed. I honestly could not recommend this to anyone. A shame considering the beginning was interesting.

I really, really enjoyed this book for its atmosphere and vibe but I did find the plot of the book confusing. Also, in terms of pacing I was never sure whether the next scene was going to be slow or very, very fast. Morstabilini does make very cool stylistic choices in Act 2 which I personally loved where the narrative is written in the format of a play for a bit with stage directions and such. Overall, I think this is a unique take on the vampire and I am impartial to a vampire book. This is speculative and leans literary in terms of prose which I think works well but it is worth noting before reading.

Here goes nothing! I've wanted to read this all year and I'm finally diving in. I'm honestly kinda scared.
