This is a devastating book to read. Virginia details her assault, starting with her father at an early age. There are boys and men even before she meets Epstein and Maxwell. Epstein and Maxwell themselves, then all of the associates that sheâs trafficked to. Itâs hard to read those details and there are times you have to put the book down just to take a second and come to terms with the fact that there are evil people in this world that are doing these things to children and itâs just terribly sad.
I hope her children and brothers know how brave and powerful she is for telling her story.

It was a nice read - via Audiobook. Though I found the voice of Patricia Santomasso let Monna sound a lot older than 14, which made it hard to keep that in my head for the majority of the story.
The worldbuilding with the magic system is in my eyes very unique but familiar and simple enough that you get quickly an understanding of how it works. And it is fun and brings wonderful insight that makes it very enjoyable.
There are a few moments where I noticed mistakes and repetitions of descriptions and explanations and it was bordering every now and then on the line of being annoying. But the further the book progressed the less that became an issue.
I loved Monna and Spindle as the main characters, they are a truly iconic duo and I would read a second book about them if one comes. Bob and the Gingerbreadman have a special spot in my heart full of fondness. And I loved Molly to pieces. I wish I had more of her in the story.
From the Plot is a nice mix of Murder Mystery with a YA hero story in a fantasy setting.
Kingfisher does bring amazing commentary on Systematic injustice and prejudice, Heroism and how it can mess with people's head to forget that Heroes go through pain first and not any of them should have had to be one to begin with. Personally I am not happy with the ending. Nothing changed in the system and it rubs me the wrong way a lot and gets me riled up because no one except the children learned something. The adults stay the same and just go on with a faulty system and their wrong behavior that got everyone into this problem to start with, because they don't want to change and make it safer. Something that does happen also in this world and is a problem.
