Athena and June are friends since studying together at Yale. Their relationship becomes more and more toxic with Athena's growing success as a writer. During one of their rather rare meetings, Athena loses her life due to a freak accident. After a lengthy police interrogation, June finally comes home - Athena's latest manuscript inside her purse (it's what she would have wanted!). Some time later, her newly advertised book, "The last front", is curiously anticipated in the literary world. After a successful release, slowly people are starting to wonder, why June, being a caucasian woman, writes about the fates of Chinese labourers in world war one. Her self-portrayal is being percieved increasingly critical and accusations of racism emerge. Eventually even authorship of her own book is being questioned. Will she manage to keep her secret, or will June succumb to the increasing pressures of the public?
The blurb didn't sound too exciting - but I had a lot of fun with "Yellowface"! June is an unbearable and off-putting first-person narrator - but in a very entertaining way. Everytime you think her behavior and way of thinking could not get worse, she teaches you better. Due to the satirical humour and the structure of the story, I was constantly curious how the plot would develop, in spite of the horrible main character. Also, the glimpse into the world of writing was very interesting for me, even though I can't really judge if it is realistic or rather exaggerated. There were just one or two moments, when the constant, sometimes ridiculously justified racism really annoyed me - but this was probably on purpose. The German audiobook had a pleasant narrator.
Definite recommendation for everyone who can handle hating the protagonist, and who isn't bothered by a bit humorous writing style.

I have, unfortunately, started doing that thing I always do when I genuinely enjoy a book and am close to finishing it: basically I just stop reading it and pretend it doesn't exist and do everything but read/listen to the book.
I know things are about to come to a head, but I don't want this to end. If I don't read it, my brain thinks, then it won't come to an end and I don't have to process the ending or whatever. I'm tired of myself, someone send help and motivation!!
