I liked how well the characters were psychologically constructed. There must be a lot of research in a book like this! The plot was always gripping. I constantly hoped that things would get better for the characters but it was just realistic that they didn't because it's people like them who suffer most from the global political power games. That brings me to the one thing I didn't like about the book: the political statement it made. The US war in Afghanistan was portrayed as a liberation of the people of Afghanistan. Before this, the book was very good at showing the terrors of war and how the hopes of the people in war parties were always disappointed because none of them had their well-being in mind. But when it came to the US, it just went along with the narrative of liberation.
