this was a very moving and emotional read. i loved the format of coates writing to/addressing his son. the love and adoration he has for his son is incredibly heartwarming
the book read like a conversation with coates about his past. it made for a very powerful account of his experience being black, specifically black in america. listening to the audiobook narrated by the author also added a layer of intimacy
i would recommend this to anyone who hasn’t read it yet

as always, love coming back to grubbs as the main character
i do appreciate that we can feel the other storylines starting to come together
grubbs was a little more frustrating in this book with always brooding and never just talking to dervish about things, but it was also realistic for a teen boy
i don’t necessarily love junis character or how others interact with her
i’m definitely excited to keep reading the series and seeing where the story goes

3.5 stars out of 5 for Our Winter Monster. While the cover and the premise really drew me in, the ride wasn’t really anything exciting.
The author wrote a very vivid story here though and I was fully captivated as to what Holly and Brian went through as a couple.
Throughout the book you get the couple in the present and the past. Both stories collide, but the lead up to it turned into a let down. We don’t get the full story from the couple and that’s where I ended up disappointed in the story. Getting a summary from a file or secondhand source when we got the time leading up to it from the couple themselves is why I was let down. The ending also didn’t really offer much of an answer or satisfaction as to what happens to Holly and Brian.
All in all this isn’t a book id necessarily recommend to anyone, especially if they like thrillers. I just didn’t find it too thrilling.

i understand keeping things vague and mysterious, and not everything needs a meaning - but this book legit explained nothing. the ending def brought the rating down at least half a point. i left this book with more questions than before
holly and brian were an interesting couple to watch unfold. they had a lot of complexities - they do seem to truly love each other, but also resent each other
i liked the small town vibes and the various locals we met
i did appreciate the role switch at the end and brian’s feralness
i did really like the writing style and characterizations and most of the plot, but the last 45 min left me feeling eh
