Don't ask how those ratings average out at 4 stars because they don't. The overall rating came from my heart.
Honestly I don't even know what to think of this book. I disliked most of the characters, aside from Oliver and I very much went off him at the end as well. Every character seemed like a caricature of a person just completely batshit at pretty much all times. The plot was fine I felt like I could guess where it was going but then we got closer and closer to the end and it was all going too well. The ending felt quite abrupt to me for it all to be resolved in the last few pages was a bit jarring. The whole plotline with Luc's dad was just there I guess it didn't really seem to have much of an impact on the rest of the story and it just kind of faded away. The writing was absurd but I got the feeling it was supposed to be which leads me to believe that all the characters being so ridiculously intense was also probably on purpose too. However despite all of those things I enjoyed myself? Will definitely be reading the next one, maybe I'm a sadist who knows.

Just. The idea of giving two characters in close but not familial relation to one another the exact same name, and proceeding to give them no other identifiable or differentiating characteristics is… an interesting writing choice.

I want to start by saying it was so nice reading this straight after the first one and seeing little flashes of Andrew in here. But anyway the absolute chaos at the start of this book had me instantly hooked. I think both characters clearly had very flawed motives when it came to starting out the agreement. I was also very intrigued after Archie's deductions what was going to happen instead of the classic 3rd act break up and I really did enjoy that twist when I got there. Though I understand the reason I don't think I liked it that Archie didn't really reveal the extent of his genius to Leo and he had to hear it from someone else. I think the fact that he knew from the start and just wanted to see how far he could push it (although obviously his motivations there changed) was really icky. Obviously Leo made the original mistake but if he'd got the right Mansley then honestly I think it would have been a solid and well deserved revenge plan. Obviously that didn't happen and he wanted to do what he could to fix it and clearly he's got some issues there that got him into that situation. I loved their relationship, the competitiveness and the banter and the constant 'one upping' eachother was absolutely absurd. When Leo left and tried to talk to Archie but realised he wasn't ready to hear it I was so disappointed and genuinely couldn't see how they were going to end up back together but obviously it all worked out in the end and in the expected spectacularly ridiculous fashion I had grown to expect from these two. Truly loved this book and the writing. Cannot wait to read more from Jax.
