What an insane graphic novel. I initially picked this up because of the cover and title, thinking it was either a juvenile or middle grade book.
NOPE.
This is at least a YA graphic novel, if not adult. The pictures are stunning, the story is dark, and overall, there aren't many words on the page. The art style coupled with classic comic panel formats was absolutely beautiful and kept the pace in this silent book moving steadily. I loved the unique way some of the larger spreads were broken up or spaced to create visual interest on the page.
I thought the story was thought-provoking. I wish there were slightly more breadcrumbs leading to the major twist of the story (and what a twist it was!). The intentional choice to use Earth as the Haven was stunning. I loved all of the life captured in the panels depicting Earth. Both the extraordinary and mundane became so meaningful.
The ending shocked me. I was dumbfounded by the conclusion of this. It didn't leave me wanting more in the sense of a sequel, but I wish that we saw the consequences a bit more of the final climax. After the big moment, the story wraps quickly, likely because there is only one known character left. I think, because of the nature of the story, that perhaps my issue is I no longer rooted for the protagonist of the story and wanted a final moment without peace.
No complaints though. Wonderful work of art.

Van Veen makes me sick every time I read her books. The way she goes for the grossest descriptions of the simplest things astounds me. 5/5

Kind of wish the first book had been a standalone, just longer to include some of what's in this book. Areas of this felt drawn out to me.
