Before you read this book, for the love of God, check the trigger warnings. It is DARK.
I struggled with the rating for this book. While the atmosphere and tension were spectacular, this book grapples with a lot of dark and disturbing content I wasn't expecting. It was grotesque. However, I loved the writing and was enthralled for most of the book, hence the high rating.
The characters in this book were phenomenal in that almost no one was likable, aside from Pliny and Waltrude (in my opinion). They were well-rounded and morally bankrupt at the best of times.
The setting, as always in AR's books, was phenomenal. I loved the sense of foreboding each of the castles provided and the rich texture of the land surrounding it. The landscape of the world was almost a supporting character for this gruesome tale.
I struggle to say I'm excited for the next book in this duology, but I do look forward to seeing what the conclusion to such a dark tale could be. Is it even possible for it to be bittersweet?
