With a ticking time bomb in her head literally, Jet Mason has seven days to solve her *own* murder. With such a thrilling premise, my expectations were set but Holly Jackson definitely met them. I love a duo that has to team up and unravel a mystery together, and old childhood friends Jet and Billy were quite endearing. Although some parts in the middle dragged and there were some reveals I thought were a tad obvious, as a whole the plot was thought out and had a satisfying conclusion. There were also some very touching moments and a genuine message that readers can pull from this story. Other than an unnecessary third act “break up” (if you can even really call it that) that is immediately moved past, the last chunk of the book was easily the strongest.

this is a solid ending to the duology, but unfortunately i did not enjoy this one as much as the first book. final rating: 3.25/5

i appreciated the message and the story that evan winter was going for. the rage of dragons is an impressive fantasy book, debut or otherwise. the protagonist and his fleshed out motivations was easily it’s strongest aspect. all of that being said, i STRUGGLED with how repetitive the plot of this book was. the start of book hooks you quickly, but after that it felt like 75% of it was a succession of fight scenes. train, duel, battle, repeat. train, duel, battle. over and over again. i’m sad this didn’t work for me more.

rating: 3.75 stars i love finding hidden gem fantasy books!! i was getting burned out on large scale fantasy books so this single POV, focused story was exactly what i needed. it was such a good palette cleanser between my longer reads and i will definitely be continuing the series. evan leikam’s prose was a perfect balance of bleak and comedic that carried the plot along smoothly. i also strongly recommend the audiobook - moira quirk absolutely killed it, no pun intended

my faves are in varying states of suffering for the next seven years at least, i need to go comatose like navani
overall, even though i was gagged by the ending, this installment *easily* falls into fourth or fifth place in my ranking of the five main stormlight books. this is definitely a finale, but it was mainly setting up a lot of ground work for the second arc. it took some reflecting to put my finger on what felt off with this book compared to the others but i finally figured it out: the derivation from our five part structure. i think that having the book split into ten days instead of our normal five parts messed up the pacing and dissolved some of the tension and stakes. the highs were high (hence my emotional breakdowns upon the completion of some character arcs) but unfortunately the lows were also low and my enjoyment lagged at points.
the characters are what makes the stormlight archive so special, but in this book, they were all isolated and off doing their own things. i was disappointed by the absence of characters interactions and pair ups that we deserved to see (bridge 4, kaladin/adolin/shallan, the kholins etc) - especially since this is a finale and we’ve spent thousands of pages with them by this point. AND if i had to see even one (1) more flashback in the spiritual realm, i was going to lose my damn mind!
despite all this, the implications for roshar and the wider cosmere are a LOT to think about. see you all in 2031!

Besides KU, Libby and Hoopla, where do you get/borrow your books? I think I'm 100% done with Amazon. My only problem is some of the books I like to read are not available on Libby and Hoopla that's why I stuck with KU. I would love to buy the physical book but my wallet can't afford it. 🥲

the storyline may have been stronger than the other EH books (i love stories within stories and also tlgad by taylor swift) but my emotional attachment certainly was not. the romance did not work for me unfortunately.

I keep seeing this talked about in my book groups, so thought I’d ask. Edit to clarify what I meant: I meant when you're having a hard time picking up the book the first time to start the book in the first place but you know you want to read it, and may even know you'll enjoy it. And also share what I do! 1) I tell myself I’ll only read a chapter a day. And then if I end up finding it hard to put down, bonus! It makes it feel less daunting than “I have to read this book”. 2) Join book challenges (rainbow cover, abc, etc). Including a “book chain” one where the next book links to the last one. Example: Book cover is same colour as title of last book. Having it in a challenge feels extra motivating. 3) Join a buddy read to talk about the book. I was curious if anyone else had strategies to share! Sometimes I truly and really want to read the book but for some reason it’s just intimidating or otherwise hard to push myself to read.
