I find it crazyyy that this first chapter gripped me so hard so soon đŠ for a 3 book fantasy series I was expecting the beginning to drag a bit, but just one chapter in and Iâm already locked IN.
The writing style also was a surprise, I thought it would be more wordy and complicated but I find it very straightforward yet descriptive enough to make it interesting.

âThere are two types of people: those that retreat and huddle together like frightened birds, overwhelmed by the darkness of this kingdom, and those that grasp their freedom to struggle on the behalf of others, their eyes fixed on a great light that will always shine for those who seek it. Pull yourselves together.â
this was a heavy read but reading a june hur book always feels like every single sentence has been purposefully and carefully constructed.

This is my first historical mistery set in Korea and I like how the author describes the boat Hwani's on . Why is the notebook burnt? Did his father find the truth and write it in his notebook?Did the perpretator try to silence him and burn the evidence or his theories?

iâm going to ignore the fact that the events of this book spanned over a period of no more than 48 hours because of alizehcyrus <3 every time he called her angel was so !!! i also adore hazan and co. and canât wait to see their odd combination come together in the next book.

this is a solid ending to the duology, but unfortunately i did not enjoy this one as much as the first book.

finally a book that feels like the ya dystopian era of old! and a good one at that. the concept for this world was so interesting and topical given todayâs technological climate.
i will say that i did find the plot a bit confusing for a good 60% of this book, and i would find myself frustrated with some of the characters, but the pieces do fit into place when you finish the whole story. the pay off at the end makes up for a lot of the confusion; on a reread, i think this will read more cohesively.
this book is definitely something unique and fresh from chloe gong. it is her most ambitious work to date and i will absolutely be tuning in for the sequel.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review

i can tell this book meant a lot to the authors given the love story is based on their grandparents who beat the odds to end up together. that makes it harder to say that this book needed a lot of work. many aspects felt very superficial or underdeveloped, especially given the serious topics with real life influences that were included.
