“We have always had different roads. The Great Spirit when he created us gave us forms of worship; the whites one, the reds another. We worship in the form of dancing; you worship in the form of prayer.” -Big Tree, Kiowa chief
Ugh this hits so hard 😭
Post from the We Do Not Want the Gates Closed between Us: Native Networks and the Spread of the Ghost Dance forum
The first 2 parts of this book were an extremely interesting background on how Native American tribes communicated and travelled between reservations. It changed my perspective on the relationships between tribes, and how people coped with the US taking control and trying to mould them.
Part 3 has been a wild turn. I didn’t know anything about the Ghost Dance prior to this book, and I guess in the beginning I assumed it was going to be a metaphor or a spread of general ideas?
I’m realizing now that it is, SO literally, a new, capital R, Religion. Complete with a prophet, visions, and messiah. The spread of it is really crazy to read about. Surely the US government won’t mind, right? 🙃

The beginning of this book is a lot of POVs to digest, but once I got a hold of them I became OBSESSED!
The writing is absolutely beautiful. The dragon and magic lore feels unique. The world religions are very different yet connected. It checked all my boxes.
But like other reviews note, a big flaw was not enough time spent on the East and their relationship with the dragons. About 60% through, I started to feel like the plot, even in the West and South, was getting rushed. I really think this should have been a duology or even trilogy :(
That bring said, it earned enough goodwill from me to still enjoy the book as a whole, and read the prequels! Really the biggest issue is that I just wanted MORE.
